Support from De Heus has helped me revive my business after a setback

Mr Sutoyo, a shrimp farmer from Tegal, Central Java, started his journey by bringing Vannamei shrimp cultivation to Kedung Kelor in Central Java, in 2013. He used to work in transportation, but then he and his friend heard about shrimp farming.

He started renting an area of 1200 square metres, without a single pond. Initially, his main motivation was the large profit which was also proportional to the risk. To run the business, he knew that he needed a good Standard of Procedure (SOP), safety and sources with good facilities and infrastructure.

The business had its setbacks. In 2017-2018, all the cycles had problems. Wondering how to get back on track, in 2019 Sutoyo met the De Heus team. They agreed to work together. This partnership helped him achieve success and he began to work on some ponds where the sources, safety and construction were in place.

“I am grateful to De Heus for supporting us when we faced failure. The De Heus team always devotes a lot of attention to the SOPs and farming methods, which helps us as entrepreneurs,” says Sutoyo.

“De Heus not only provides feed and technical support, but also helps us with construction, resources and teamwork. We must also follow strict SOPs to ensure that we progress and are successful,” he adds.

To improve the farm’s performance, the De Heus technical support team also helped implement the Synbiotics system in Sutoyo’s ponds. This system combines prebiotics and probiotics, focusing on the water balance so that the prebiotics work more effectively in the ponds.

He now owns 67 ponds or around 7 hectares of ponds which are his own. As his biggest supporter, his wife has helped him build and achieve more. In the future, he hopes to expand and add modern ponds with adequate facilities and safer sources. Together with other shrimp farmers, he shares his knowledge and experiences to help make shrimp farming in Indonesia more sustainable.
