Reduced clostridium diarrhoea through change in feeding approach
The first day after farrowing all looks good. But on the second or third day however, suddenly there are piglets in the farrowing room that have a drop in growth. The first thing that comes to mind is that the sow has too little milk. But a more careful look shows small spots of diarrhoea lying about here and there. By means of a quick test it is easy to isolate the pathogens that are playing a role here.

The crucial period in calf rearing
If you want to achieve a younger calving age of your heifers, the most important rearing period is between five and eight months of age. Practical experience and research show that young calves can grow very quickly in this period: more than 1,000g a day in some cases! While increased growth is an extremely valuable part of reaching the insemination weight quickly, it’s also worth paying attention to the type of growth. Animals can grow through becoming fat or through the development of the muscles and carcass. The Kaliber Rearing Plan is designed to achieve the latter approach. Read on to find out more about how you can make the most of this crucial rearing period.

Saliva analysis to detect respiratory disorders
At many farms, when suddenly health problems occur, the pig farmer and the veterinarian look for solutions without having access to the results of any analyses. Analyses generally takes too long and pig farmers often consider them too expensive because they yield little result. The alternative for respiratory disorders is to conduct a saliva analysis for piglets and growers. This is cheaper method and the results are quickly available.

Helping farmers in South Africa reduce their use of antibiotics
Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to human and animal health. De Heus is committed to not only eliminating antibiotics from its feed by 2030, but also to helping farmers reduce their use of antibiotics as a preventive measure against disease. The EU has already introduced regulations restricting the routine use of antibiotics in agriculture, but in countries like South Africa, legislation governing antibiotics is still lenient. As a result, administering antibiotics to animals is an everyday practice on South African farms.
